  Infineon Technologies introduces the new TO247 4pin package in conjunction with the latestCoolMOS™ technologies of 600 V C7, 650 V C7 and 600 V P6. With new generations ofpower switches becoming faster and faster, the effect of the parasitic elements of packageand board limit more and more the overall system performance. In many applicationsthe switching losses are significantly increased by the negative feedback caused bythe parasitic inductance in the source lead of the power switch. An effective measure toovercome this problem is to provide an additional connection to the source (Kelvin connection),that is used as a reference potential for the gate driving voltage, thereby eliminatingthe effect of voltage drops over the source inductance. The achievable efficiencyimprovement, resulting from faster switching transients, can in fact be significant.

  With the new 650V CoolMOS™ C7 series Infineon brings a new level of performance in hard switching applications such as Power Factor Correction (PFC). It is the successor to the CP series and provides efficiency benefits across the whole load range through balancinga number of key parameters. The Best-in-Class RDS(on) leads to increased full loadefficiency and improves on our already BiCCoolMOS™ C6 parts. CoolMOS™ C7 thereforeestablishes clear leadership in Packages like TO-247, TO-220, TO- 220FP, D2PAK,DPAK as well as ThinPAK. EOSS reduction brings efficiency benefits at light load and thelow Qg correlates to faster switching and lower Eon and Eoff which gives efficiency benefitsacross the whole load range. As well as balancing the various parameters to givethe best-in-class performance, measures were taken to even improve implementation/ease of use behavior compared to the CoolMOS™ CP series.

  650V was chosen to give extra safety margin for designers and make it suitable for both SMPS and Solar inverters. Finally the new CoolMOS™ C7 series benefits from the 12 years manufacturing experience and continues to offer Infineon’s outstanding quality.

  This document describes the evaluation board EVAL_2.5KW_CCM_4PIN, which is designed to evaluate the performance of the TO-247 4pin CoolMOS™ C7 family. The board is developed for laboratory use only and does not serve any commercial purpose. Before operating the evaluation board, please read the general safety instruction section.

  The aim of this document is to help the customers to get familiar with the evaluation board, and to investigate the different behavior of conventional 3pin devices compared to the high performance TO-247 4pin CoolMOS™ devices within a PFC application.
